UPDATE (1/5/2013): Ninja reorganization for ZEN in Season 2 update. Details can be found here (full credits to locky92 for being awesome). In a nutshell, ZEN's mobility, very unfortunately, got nerfed, but damage passive enhancements have been drastically augmented, ESPECIALLY ON BOSSES WHERE YOU CRIT 95% OF THE TIME.
Pros
Good damage, both 1v1 (especially on bosses) and Mobbing to an extent
Passive Recovery
Cons
As of now, no hypers to talk about.
And probably for a long time /heh
Seriously unoriginal: ZEN skills are copies of that of the main Adventurer Pirate classes: Captain and Viper
1st/2nd job may be a bit slow and boring
AP Guide
UPDATE: Tempest gets rid of the secondary stat requirement for most equipment so there is no reason NOT to go pure DEX anymore. Therefore this section is mostly redundant now.
Primary Stat is DEX
Secondary Stat is STR
Distribution of AP is heavily dependant on funds and whether you are able to get equips that can give STR. I recommend going for low STR (around 20-40) as you are able to get +30 STR from Physical Training, a 2nd job skill. But the best build is still pure DEX, if you can manage to get the STR.
Here's a list of easy-to-attain stuff that can give STR:
Physical Training (+30)
Zakum/Scar or Targa Helm (+13-17/+16-20) [Just ask your higher level guild/ally mates to help you]
Cannoneer Link Skill (+15) [Just have Lvl 70+ Cannoneer for the Link Skill]
Mark of Naricain/R&J Pendant (+5/+9) [Former is preferred if you have a big enough guild/ally, latter can be obtained by doing the Romeo & Juliet PQ]
Lvl 100 Pirate Shoes (+6-7) [DRPQ Gift Box]
Lvl 100 Pirate Overall (+7) ["]
Lvl 100 Pirate Gloves (+3) ["]
Kenta's Goggles (+5) [Kenta PQ]
Marx/Cora Von Leon Belt (+7) [Escape PQ]
STR rings III and IV (+7 total) [Crafting, though there are better ones that come with WA to boot]
Neo City Time Traveller Medal (+6) [Do Neo City questline]
Minimum Total STR: 104

Max Double Shot
This build focuses more on mobility than on damage, since at these levels you would probably be one-hitting everything anyway. First of all you would need a point in a reliable attacking skill. Dragon Wing Attack has wonderful range (The tornado even flies off the platform when it reaches the edge) while Violent Impact does more damage but is a close range skill. Add 1 into Double Shot to improve attacking speed when you don't need to mob. Chivalrous Movement and Somersault both allow you to move faster and jump further. Max Lion's Might after that for a bonus to your critical attacks, and then we add Dragon Wing Attack to 19 as it has no utility after 1st job. The reason why Violent Impact is maxed is that it can chain with a 2nd job skill, Double Helix, for a great rushing combo. After that, max Double Shot as a requirement for Triple Shots in 2nd job. It can have points put into it earlier, but you are much better off spamming DWE/VI.

Max Triple Shots
I offered 2 builds; 2nd job is really quite diverse in terms of possible Builds. Anyway, first of all you add a point into the attacking skills; Double Helix is a great attack that moves you forward and hits mobs at the same time for good damage AND it chains with Violent Impact to let you surf across a map killing everything in your way. 1 into Triple Shot to be a bit more efficient at 1v1, and Panda Earthquake which has great vertical range but is a rather slow skill (meaning the SP here is optional). After that add 5 Gun Mastery as the requirement for Thunder Resurgence, which we first put 3 points into for a 1 minute duration. After that continue to max Gun Mastery to obtain more stable damage. We then max Dream for a great buff that increases you attack. If you have not maxed Physical Training by now, max it, then max Will of the Chivalrous to use less pots at the harder hitting mobs at this level. For the Pot Saver's build Will is just maxed at the start, the order of the rest remains unchanged. From then on, the path is identical: Max Double Helix (It is much faster when chained with Violent Impact and has more uses than Panda Earthquake). Max Triple Shots as the requirement for the almightly 1v1 skill: Dartle (aka Rapidfire), then pump Panda Earthquake to 14 because why not, then Max Thunder Resurgence in order to have to recast it less.

Level 100 +3 Tiger's Charge [Max]
End Result; Everything is Maxed, except for Fist of the Truth Seeker which is left at 19.
Dual Gun Flash would be your new and improved mobbing skill, complete with great horizontal AND vertical range. Tiger's Charge allows you to knockback mobs, Fist is a great but close range 1v1 skill, and the first point into Sturdy Body gives you 11% more crit and 1% PDR. Add a point to Octo-Cannon to be able to use it (it won't help THAT much though)then we max Sturdy Body for an overall increase in damage. After that max Dual Gun Flash as it would be your primary mobbing skill for a while, and then Dice for a random (hence somewhat unreliable) buff and can really help if you get lucky (a 5/6 for example). Indestructible to help you sponge some more damage from harder hitting mobs around that level range, then pump Fist to 19 for further improvement in 1v1. Fist is not maxed as it is useless in 4th job. Octo-Cannon is next for more tangible damage on it, and then point dump into Tiger's Charge, which primary use is still only to KB and so it is not a priority to be maxed.

Playstyle:
Mobbing (Primary): Heroic Raid

At this point in time, you can choose 2 routes: Maxing Heroic Raid first or maxing Pirate Style first. The former would attain much more DPS faster (from 1896% to 2360%), while the latter provides status resistance, Stance and a good 10% damage buff when maxed. Your choice.

End Results; Everything is Maxed, 59 Free SP
Ah... Congrats on your Zen 4. This is where everything becomes almost the same as Captain. A point in Heroic Raid for an OP mobbing move, Dartle for 1v1 (I hope you've maxed Triple Shots), Critical Offense for an initial huge bonus to your Crits ad Double Down for a greater bonus if you get really lucky. At 101, Headshot and Continual Aiming to be able to use them. A point in Regret is solely for fun though, it is an otherwise useless ultimate that is only for show. First we add a point into Counterattack, which provides a nice damage boost when you get hit, then we quickly max Double Down to improve the chances of rolling doubles. After that, max Critical Offense for a huge damage increment, especially against bosses. Max Counterattack next to improve the additional damage it grants as well as its duration. The 2 paths that can be taken next are outlined above, though do note that Pirate's Style pairs up nicely with Counterattack as it reduces your avoid and grants Stance when you get hit to activate Counterattack. Now we focus on the 1v1 skills: Dartle and Continual Aiming. Max Maple Warrior if you can afford it to improve damage way more than any other skill at this point of time, if not cap it at 9/19. It is highly recommended for you to save some SP to max it when you can afford the books. Max Hero's Will to help when bossing. Headshot has a really long delay and it already comes with the OHKO effect at level 1, and so is maxed late, but Regret being the most useless skill in your arsenal is the last. The rest of the SP can be saved for no purpose or dumped into the rush skills from 1st/2nd job.
